Welcome to Skálholt Summer Concerts
Contemplation and spiritual explorations are probably as old as mankind. It is a repeating pattern throughout the history of civilization, of religion and arts: how humans always seek beyond the tactile, trying to gain a better understanding of the world and themselves. Skálholt in South Iceland has been a site for spiritual practice as good as since the island was inhabited. From 1056 until 1785, it was one of Iceland's two episcopal sees, along with Hólar, making it a cultural and political center.
Skálholt Summer Concerts are a direct harvest of this heritage. Contemporary and early music, performed on period instruments, has been the artistic vision of the festival since in was established by Helga Ingólfsdóttir in 1975 and this year’s programme will be no exception. It is immense pleasure for us to greet you at the festival this summer where the masters of the Baroque and fresh avantgarde of today and tomorrow make acquaintance.
