Composers in residence 2021
We are thrilled to announce that Haukur Tómasson and Eygló Viborg Höskuldsdóttir are the composer in residence 2021. Haukur is a renowned composer both in Iceland and abroad. Eygló is still in the beginning of her career, but has made a name for herself both in Iceland and the US. They represent two different generations of Icelandic composers, and we are really looking forward to listening to their inspiring music in Skálholt 2021.

Haukur Tómasson
Haukur Tómasson was born in Reykjavík 1960. He studied music in Reykjavík, Köln, Amsterdam and he completed his masters degree in University of California in SanDiego. Tómasson has composed many large pieces, such as his opera Fjórða söng Guðrúnar, nine orchestral works, eight solo concertos and also many chamber and choir pieces. His music is often characerized as rhythmical with a diverse combination of instruments. Tómasson has received many prizes and nominations thorugh his career, f.ex. winning the RÚV Music Prize two times, Bjartsýnisverðlaun Bröste 1996, and won the Icelandic Music Prize three times. He received the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2004 for his opera Fjórða söng Guðrúnar. He is popular composer both in Iceland and abroad, and many renowed ensemble has comissioned piece by him, f.ex. Los Angeles Philharmonic, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands, Haustinu í Varsjá, Orkester Norden, OperaNord, Listahátíð í Reykjavík, Kammersveit Reykjavíkur, Symphony Orchestra in Stavanger, Caput to name a few.

Eygló Höskuldsdóttir Viborg
Eygló Höskuldsdóttir Viborg studied composition at Berklee College of Music where she finished her bachelor degree in 2017. She recieved a Fulbright stipend to study a master in composition at New York University. Her main teachers were Julia Wolfe and Robert Honstein. During spring 2019, Eygló was chosen to be one of the composers in Yrkja V. Yrkja is a collaboration between Icelandic Music Center and the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. She composed “Lo and Behold” for this project which premiered at Dark Music Days in 2020. Eygló 's music has been performed in Iceland, Boston, New York and Tokyo. She is also a singer, and has played an important part in the choir milieu in Iceland. She sang in Graduale choir at Langholts Church and Graduale Nobili, as well as on Björk´s record Biophilia where she also took part in the world tour. |
